Project Overview

Built in the backyard of a 1920s Spanish-style home, this 394-square-foot studio ADU was designed to feel like a natural architectural extension rather than a standalone add-on.

The homeowners wanted more than a simple rental unit — they wanted a space that respected the character of the main house while functioning efficiently as a flexible studio and living area. Arched windows, warm tile tones, brass fixtures, and custom detailing were carefully selected to echo the original home’s Spanish influences.

Inside, the open-concept layout maximizes usable square footage while eliminating unnecessary circulation. Two strategically placed skylights introduce vertical light, enhancing the sense of volume and preventing the compact footprint from feeling confined. Custom built-in shelving acts as both architectural feature and functional storage, reinforcing the studio’s versatility without sacrificing clean lines.

The result is a highly efficient space that feels intentional, refined, and distinctly connected to its setting.

Architectural Continuity

Designed to complement the existing 1920s Spanish-style home, this ADU incorporates arched openings, decorative tile, and warm brass finishes that tie the new structure seamlessly to the original property.

Intelligent Studio Layout

At just under 400 square feet, every dimension was carefully planned. The open kitchen, living, and sleeping area eliminates wasted space while maintaining flexibility for multiple uses.

Skylight-Driven Natural Light

Two overhead skylights, combined with well-positioned windows and French doors, flood the interior with natural light — creating an airy, expansive feel uncommon in studio-sized ADUs.

Custom Built-In Shelving
